Woodhall Spa Tree Committee

The formation of a Tree Committee by the Parish Council was a direct outcome of the Woodhall Spa Parish Plan (Chap 8 - Environment & Countryside) published in 2005.

King George Avenue running through the Pinewoods, Woodhall Spa"Woodhall Spa is described as an 'oasis' in Lincolnshire, chiefly because of its woods. The overall environment in which residents live attracted as great deal of comment in the household survey. Woodhall Spa's very name comes from its abundance of natural provision, the spa, woods and the nearby river all play a vital part to its continued success as a whole. Tourists and residents alike place a high value on its natural beauty.

The woods in and around Woodhall Spa are extremely important to the parishioners with an overwhelming 98% of respondents saying that they are 'important'. An equally high number of residents were concerned about the 'like for like' replacement of trees, around 95% agreeing that it was important that the same species, or at least a similar one, was used. These strongly held views are made by an informed community, where 59% of the population walk the woods at least once a week" (Parish Plan).

Woodhall Spa Tree Planting Day - 29 Nov 08

Ostler's Plantation, Woodhall SpaThis years Tree Council annual tree planting celebration, National Tree Week is 26 November - 7 December 2008 and marks the beginning of the winter tree planting season.  It began in 1975 and has seen over 20 million trees planted since.  It's the ideal opportunity to do one great thing for the environment - plant a tree - and bring about a myriad of benefits, many of which will have long term impact in times of climate uncertainty.

The Tree Council works closely with BBC Breathing Places, the Autumn Watch program and the campaign to ‘do one thing' to improve our environmental health.

National Tree Week is a great chance for communities to do something positive for their local treescape. Each year, voluntary bodies and local authorities, up to 200 schools and community groups and many others, support the initiative by setting up fun, worthwhile and accessible events, inspiring upward of a quarter of a million people to get their hands dirty and together plant around million trees.

Do you want to be part of this great collective achievement?  The Woodhall Spa Tree Preservation Committee are planning a village tree- planting day on Saturday 29 November to coincide with the national event.  Plans are still tentative at the moment but there will be more details in the October Parish newsletter.

The trees will come from a variety of sources but anyone wishing to take part will be encouraged to bring along a tree/trees to plant as well.  Even if you can’t take part in the planting you can donate a tree and get someone else to do the hard work for you.  We will be making the preparations for the day over the next few months so any organisations (schools, clubs or youth organisations) wishing to be involved should get in contact using the details below – the more the merrier.  Similarly, if any local businesses are interested in contributing trees to the effort please get in contact.  You can get more information on the national event at www.treecouncil.org.uk or www.bbc.co.uk/breathingplaces.  The Parish Council Tree Preservation Committee is always looking for new members.  If you’re interested, please get in touch and help keep Woodhall Spa green.
