Show goers defy showers
Visitor numbers held up well for the Woodhall Spa Country Show despite a series of showers that swept across the showfield during the event.
"It was fairly wet in the morning," commented Show Secretary Sue Stennett, "but the visitors were soon rolling up at the gates, and when the sun broke through later the numbers really built up."
Actual attendance figures are not yet available, but the organisers expect it to be similar to last year despite the weather.
Popular attractions included a display of Maypole dancing and choral singing by the children of St Andrew's School in Woodhall Spa. The pupils also crowned their own May Queen, Fiona Sanderson, in the show main ring.
Local school children also contributed decorated plaques on the theme of wool in the Education marquee.
The event's machinery theme was 'The Lend-Lease Years', looking back at tractors and other farm machinery brought into the UK during WWII. It was echoed by a parade of standards by local British Legion groups, during which a two-minute silence commemorated the dead of the wars of the 20th century, and more recent events. Rev John Thorold, who officiated at the parade and the short service which followed, reminded the show-goers that another British life had been lost in military action only a couple of days earlier.
An excellent display of livestock featured in the show classes, with the inter-species championship, judged between the individual champions in the horse, sheep, cattle and poultry competitions, won by the champion horse, Hainton Midnight Sensation, a Shire owned by Sue Cosgrove and Mrs S Ford, from Gautby, near Market Rasen.
Trade stand owners reported that they had a good day, with more than one suggesting that it should become a two-day event. Sue Stennett was not very keen on the idea!
"We rely on our hard-working and very competent band of volunteers to make the day as good as it is," she explained. "It wouldn't be kind to expect them to turn out to do it again tomorrow."
