About our club Chartered in 1988 and twinned
with the Rotary Club of Grandvilliers, Picardy, France. Membership
approx 46 members. This is the home club of John Hockin, Past
President of Rotary International in Great Britain and Ireland
and Trevor Butterworth MBE the current District Governor of
District 1270.
Rotarians weekly man the Age Concern mini bus to convey our senior
citizens to their Luncheon Club and then return them home. The club
has for many years organised the "Christmas
Fayre" (which is getting very popular) and provide the Christmas
lights and decorations you see throughout the village during December.
Each year the Rotary Club present a musical extraviganser at the Lincolnshire
Aviation Heritage Museum, East Kirkby, with such acts as "Kenny
Ball & his Jazzmen", "AbbA Gold", The Sid Lawrence
Orchestra". This year "The Passedena Roof Orchestra
" and "The Batchelors" appeared on the same bill.
This event raises most of the club's funds which enables them to
support many local and international good causes. Rest assured the
club has played a major role in supplying tents and water purification
aparatus to the earthquake victims of Pakistan and to the victims
of the 2005 sunami disaster.

International
Project "Emerald Hill - Lighting the way"
The Emerald House Orphanage and School for Deaf Children,
Emerald Hill
Harare
Zimbabwe
The Rotary
Club of Woodhall Spa have embarked on an ambitious International
project with two American Rotary Clubs, The Rotary Club of Marietta
Metro and The Rotary Club of Roswell East - both in Georgia, the
e-club of London Centenary and the Rotary Club of Harare West,
Zimbabwe. The project revolves around The Emerald House Orphanage
and School for Deaf Children which is situated a short way outside
Harare.
There
are 95 kids in residence and a further 240 who attend the school.
All are deaf and the majority are HIV positive. Acute power shortages
in the country means that these children are in "darkness" most
of the nights. The deaf communicate by sight and when its dark
they cannot see so cannot communicate, they just sit and wait for
the lights in silence often than not, until dawn.
The project
is to provide a suitable generator including an alternative source
and the project costing include ongoing running and maintenance
estimates. The project will be overseen by The Rotary Club of Harare
West.
The estimated
cost is $25,000 and we are advised by our partners that inflation
in Zimbabwe is running currently at over 1000% pa. This is a major
problem and why these children need help.
The project
came to our attention by coincidence from two different continents
- firstly via an e-mail from Rotarian Sally Platt of Marietta Metro
and within a week or two we had a visit from Past President Mark
Oxley of the Harare West club who attended two of our club meetings
whilst visiting his sister Veronica in Woodhall Spa. Mark went
into some detail and "sold" the project to us and we
thank him for his presence at our meetings and we look forward
to working with his club and with the other participating clubs
to make this project a success.
Our International
Committee chair Mike Roberts is co-ordinating things from this
end and we must mention the e-club of London Centenary who have
also been represented at our meetings - this is a new concept in
Rotary and we recommend a visit to their website : www.erotarylondon.org we
are looking forward to working together.
